July Monthly Facts
Sorry guys and gals this is a bit late for this month. But to make it up, I'll add a few more facts to the list! Credit to Aileen Liang.
1. In chess, there are 169,518,829,100,544,000,000,000,000,000 ways to play the first ten moves.
2. The average age an American receives a first romantic kiss is 13 years old.
3. The Apollo 11 only had 20 seconds left of fuel when it landed.
4. About 1/3 of American adults are at least 20% above their recommended weight.
5. It's illegal to be fat in Japan. (No, seriously. There's a law for adults that your waistline has to be under a certain length.)
6. Driving 55mph instead of 65mph increases your mpg by 15%. (Around 55mph is where the mpg is the lowest... don't drive at 55mph unless you have to.)
7. 58% of school kids say pizza is their favorite cafeteria food.
8. The average American drinks 3.4 cups of coffee a day. ToO MuCH CafFiNe!!!
9. 1 out of every 2000-3000 babies are born with a tooth.
10. You are more likely to die on your birthday than on any other day of the year. But why? :(
11. The Romans whitened their teeth with urine (pee). Apparently it worked. Please don't try this at home, though.
12. It takes an average person 7 minutes to fall asleep every night (for me, it's more like 30...)
13. The average flight speed of a golf ball during a PGA tour is 160 mph.
14. 85% of phone calls are conducted in English. (Americans are using electronics too much.)
15. Nearly 6% marriage proposals are conducted over the phone. (Oh, how electronics have taken over our minds...)
16. 13% of the letters in an average book are "e"s.
17. Your left hand does 56% of the typing. (Oh, so that's why my left hand is so tired right now.)
18. American office workers send an average of 36 emails a day. (Assuming they sleep for about 8 hours, that's about an email per 26 minutes and 40 seconds!)
19. The average American man laughs 69 times a day where as the average American woman laughs 55 times a day.
20. One in seven Americans can't locate the US on a map. (I'm crying right now...)
21. An epidemic of laughing that lasted almost a year broke out in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) in 1962. Several thousand people were affected, across several villages. It forced a school to close. It wasn't fun, though — other symptoms included crying, fainting, rashes, and pain.
And a puzzle for you to solve:
Let S be the Sum 1-1+1-1+1-1...
At first glance, it seems like S = 0, right? Right... but wrong.
Think of it this way.
S = 1 + (-1+1-1+1-1...)
The sum in the parenthesis is 0, so then S = 1.
Right? Well, what is S, 0 or 1? Don't decide yet, there's more to it.
Let's take the negative of both sides.
-S = -1+1-1+1-1...
But notice that this -S is just S with the 1 lopped off...
So -S = -1+1-1+1-1... = S-1
The only value of S that satisfies this equation is S = 1/2.
So what is S, 1/2, 0, or 1?
Have any ideas?

There's a typo: "14. 85% of phone calls are conducted in English. (Americans are using electronics to much.)" TOO, not to. :)
