The Electoral College
The Electoral College is undemocratic.
The Electoral College is a group of 538 votes that decide who becomes president. These votes are distributed mostly proportional to the 50 states, and since 1964, DC, which receives 3 votes. The amount of Electoral Votes each state gets is 3 plus the amount of representatives, distributed evenly among the states.
In this simplified version of the Electoral College, if a group has a majority of votes in that state, it gets all the votes. It's winner take all. But the Electoral Votes aren't actually votes. They're people. And those people, called Electors, can choose to not vote for the promised to vote for when time comes in December. Sure, this has never changed the outcome of an election, though it has happened 87 times in US history.
Also, if the USA was a fair democracy, everyone's vote should count evenly. That is, every Elector should represent the population of the USA divided by the amount of Electors, or about 597 thousand people. California has 39 million people, so it should have about 65 votes, but it only gets 55 votes. It's 10 votes short of what it should get! Also, Wyoming only has about 586 thousand people, so it should get only one vote, though it gets 4. A person living in Wyoming has his/her vote count for 4.7 Californian votes.
If you think that the Electoral College did that to help smaller states to give them more power, it's failing spectacularly. A party only needs 1 more vote to get a majority to win a state. The candidates spend all their time in swing states because the other states are automatic wins. Texas and California will most likely not receive much attention from presidential candidates, as they are almost guaranteed to be Republican and Democrat wins. This harms almost all Americans: Only 18% of Americans live in a swing state, and candidates will do whatever it takes to please them. The "unimportant" states are ignored.
By taking advantage of the electoral college, you could win the election even if you only got 21.91 percent of the popular vote. In 4 of the US presidency elections, the candidate that won the popular vote actually lost the election due to the electoral college, a nearly 7 percent failure rate. Would you want to play a game that 7% of the time, the loser actually won? For more info on this, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wC42HgLA4k and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcZTTB10_Vo
This is why we should put an end to the Electoral College. It helps a minority of Americans, and it has given the presidency to a candidate with support from a minority 4 times. It should be abolished because this is not a democracy, it is indefensible.
