Weekly News #1
Starting this week, we will post updates on global news with a science and politics edge. Credit goes to CNN, Google news, and other sources.
Science: One of Antarctica's largest glaciers, Totten Glacier, may be melting due to wind, as opposed to climate change (Though climate change is still a major player). If it melted away into the sea, it would cause the global sea level to rise by about 3.5 meters. After years of observation, Chad Greene and his team at the University of Texas at Austin conclude using satellite imagery and special observations that the main culprit in the ice shelf of the Totten Glacier is wind.
Technology: Cyber criminals have broken into art galleries using email scams that have fooled some galleries in the US and London. These emails send buyers duplicated invoices with the details of the account changed. In essence, this means that the robbers get paid for a fake copy of the painting. Art dealer groups urge galleries to remain vigilant.
Engineering: FAMU-FSU College of Engineering doctoral candidate Joshua DeGraff developed an advanced class of scalable motion sensors using silver ink electrodes and sheets of pure carbon nano tube buckypaper. The potential uses for this are limited to DeGraff's imagination at this point. It is extremely hardy, flexible, so it can be used for a multitude of things from better sleep and fitness tracking to centrifugal nuclear reactors.
Math: USB researcher Ben Tippett has come up with a viable set of math equations allowing for the potential of a time machine. He claims that while many believe time travel is merely science fiction, "Mathematically, it is possible". Ever since Einstein's theories about spacetime, scientists have been working to disprove the idea of time travel. These theories were later proved, prompting Tippett's mathematical research in the field. If he does invent a time machine, it will undoubtedly be a massive breakthrough in human technology.
Politics: Sheesh! Where To Start! Ads are airing on TV urging former voters to impeach Donald Trump. www.needtoimpeach.com claims that nearly 3 million Americans have signed on the dotted line to impeach Donald Trump. Advertisements are circulating nationally in order to gains support for this cause. The ad can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXl8vRmLeJk . No official statement has been made from Trump, likely because less than 1% of Americans have signed up. I personally don't have an opinion on this.
