Thomas Jefferson (President Post Series #3)
Why was Thomas Jefferson, our 3rd president, the author of the Declaration of Independence, famous? Many kids know he is famous, but don't know why. Why was Thomas Jefferson one of the most respected president of the USA?
Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner, an author, and much more.
Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner, if you know him, you would think that's not true. In all of his public life, Jefferson had been an opponent to slavery. It was crazy to think that, but Jefferson still did. He passed laws making slavery prohibited in Virginia, one of the highest slave population areas. Jefferson did have slaves, yes, but it was different. He didn't beat them like other owners, but he treated them like people, not animals. He was very sensitive in that situation.
One of the most famous titles for Jefferson was writing our nation's first important document, the Declaration of Independence. As history tells, Benjamin Franklin, another president, suggested Jefferson to write it. At that point, Jefferson was a young and bright fellow. Franklin saw opportunity in him, so he motioned the idea of Jefferson writing the declaration. People agreed, and Jefferson wrote it. He wasn't exactly the only one who wrote, others helped him "revise" it, but he was the one who wrote the base of the Declaration of Independence.
The Louisiana Purchase. One of the most famous purchases in history. It was able to double the USA's original size. 828,000 acres for a mere price of $15,000,000. Sold by France, namely Napoleon, Thomas Jefferson was able to make this bargain that gave him a HUGE advantage. This is only one of Jefferson's amazing moves.
The Discovery of the Western part of America was actually discovered by the duo explorers, Lewis and Clark, full names Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were sent by none other than Jefferson himself, to discover the western part of America. If you didn't know, that led to millions of people moving west by wagons, leading to death and all sorts of other experiences. Lewis and Clark traveled all the way from the east coast to the area around present day Washington and Oregon area.
These are just some of many phenomenal things that Thomas Jefferson has done in his days. There are much more, but these are some of the most famous actions done by the man none other than himself,
