Space and Science Informant/Facts July 2017 (More Facts!)

Here are some cool facts (no pun intended -- they won't cool you off!) for July! There will be a couple more than usual, but hey, who doesn't like facts?

Let's start!

  1. Unless food is mixed with saliva, you can't taste it. 
  2. The smell of freshly cut grass is the same scent that plants actually release in distress. 
  3. Humans only have 3 color cones (they determine which colors that we see in), but mantis shrimps have 16. 
  4. Speaking of mantis shrimps, they can swing their claws so fast that it boils the water around it and creates a flash of light. 
  5. The national animal of Scotland is the Unicorn. 
  6. Astronomers' telescope cameras are 550 megapixels. In comparison, those huge cameras you buy at the store are at most 24-32 megapixels. 
  7. A lobsters' blood is originally colorless, but when exposed to oxygen, it turns blue. 
  8. In approximately 4 billion years, the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxies will collide. 
  9. The supermassive black hole in the heart of the massive M87 Galaxy has a mass of about 3.5 million suns (or solar masses). 
  10. If you want to see the record for supermassive black holes in the heart of galaxies, check out the Sombrero Galaxy -- it's black hole has a mass of about a billion suns!
  11. The hemoglobin in our blood, which contains a high concentration of iron, is likely from the core of a massive star that exploded about 8 billion years ago. In short, us humans are made from stardust. 
  12. If you lift a kangaroo's tail off of the ground, it can't hop. 
  13. In the UK, it's illegal to eat pies on Christmas Day.
  14. The person who invented the Frisbee was cremated, and then he was made into Frisbees after he died!
  15. Heart attacks are most likely to happen on a Monday. 
  16. Recycling just one glass jar can save enough energy to watch TV for 3 hours. 
  17. A crocodile can't poke it's tongue out. 
  18. The blue whale is so big that a small child could swim through the veins of one! 
  19. Pirates wore earrings because they thought that it would improve their eyesight. 
  20. Dying is actually illegal in the Houses of Parliament! 
  21. Birds don't urinate. 
  22. Every human spent about half an hour as a single cell. 
  23. Slugs have 4 noses. 
  24. Worms eat their own poop. 
  25. In total, there are 205 bones in a skeleton of a horse. 
  26. Each year, there are more than 40,000 toilet-related injuries in the U.S.  
  27. George W. Bush was once a cheerleader. 
  28. Kleenex tissues were originally used as filters in gas masks.

  2. Some of those have nothing to do with space or science....
    Also Owen once had the "birds don't urinate" fact but he changed it....
    It was in either May or June I forgot :D
