Typing Vs. Writing
It's happened to all of us - your teacher makes you write a long, boring, essay, and you have to HANDWRITE it, with no exceptions. A lot of people (me included) grope and whine, all saying something along the lines of "Why can't I type it?"
Yup, that's right. If you type way faster than you write, then you would prefer typing over writing, but if you're a person who loves to write, you'll consequently love the feeling of the pencil in your hand as you elegantly write out the word. Us, as admins/authors, all type at 50-100 words per minute, and I can confidently say that we all type faster than we write. However, that's just us. How does writing stack up against typing in a global scale?
Well, I did some research about this, and it turns out that a typical adult can write about 20 words per minute, while they can type 50-80 words per minute. However, that's far from being the end of the story. Let's see the pros and cons of typing and writing:
Typing:
- You can probably type faster than you write
- Has all sorts of tools that can help you make your meaning clear, such as spellcheck, highlighter, etc.
- Can have as much "digital paper" as you want, and you can never make holes in it
- Writing is very legible and consistent (all letters are the same shape, same darkness, same thickness, etc.)
- Can choose from a variety of fonts to make your writing stand out, or you can make your writing bold, italic, or underlined with ease.
- Your eyes may get tired from staring at the screen too long
- Sometimes computers just can't do what you want them to - you just can't format whatever you want to do in the right way
- Has a lot of automatic features that switch on - sometimes it's helpful but other times it gets in the way and is annoying
Writing:
- Can format the paper/writing whatever way you want - no computer systems to get in the way
- Is actually good exercise - it burns up about 46 Calories per hour!
- Can choose from different writing tools to write differently, and can also color easier
- Comfortable for your vision
- Sometimes the paper won't be so neat because your writing may start to fade because of holes made by erasers, pencil smudges, etc.
- Sometimes writing isn't legible
- You can probably write slower than you type
Which is better - writing or typing? We'll let you decide. However, on a closing note, some food for thought: Shakespeare wrote, in his Sonnet 65, "That in black ink my love may still shine bright."
Hope you enjoyed this!!!
